Five ninth grade students from Denmark observed something unusual. What they found made scientists around the world take notice. Plants would not grow near their cell phones.
An Observation Leads To A Question
The five girls discovered that if they slept with their mobile phones near their heads at night, they had a problem concentrating the next day. They wondered if cell phone radiation actually affected humans.
Using The Scientific Method
_The girls wanted to set up an experiment that demonstrated the effect of cell phone radiation. They chose to use plants instead of humans for safety purposes. The girls set up a total of twelve trays filled with a herb called cress (Lepidium sativum). They placed six containers in a room without radiation. The other six trays were placed in a room next to two routers that emitted about the same type of radiation as a typical cell phone. For the next twelve days, the students observed, measured, weighed, and photographed the plants. The results were alarming..! The seeds placed next to the routers either did not grow or died. The herbs planted in the other room flourished.
California Issues A Warning
Because of related concerns, the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) acknowledged that, although more research was warranted, they issued a warning:
- Do not keep a cell phone in your pocket
- Do not put it near your ear for long periods
- Do not sleep with it near you
- Keep use low when there are two bars or less
- Be aware that if you are in a fast-moving car, bus, or train the phone will emit more RF energy to maintain the connection
